Janet Cullen

Janet Cullen, Chair

For the last twenty-five years I was a headteacher in a large inner-city comprehensive school. I want to support the local party in engaging with and contributing actively to national policy. The Labour Party is at a crossroads and I look forward to using my public sector experience to contribute going forward.

I have been a member of the Labour Party since 1980 and undertaken various roles within the branch since then. I have been actively campaigning for the Labour Party throughout this time.

I have long been familiar with the 2010 Equalites Act which came into effect in April 2011. That was a great leap forward in giving rights and support to a broad spectrum of people with all kinds of disability both physical and mental. Despite the law offering protection the rules are often not adhered to and disabled people continue to experience discrimination in the workplace and in social situations. Since qualifying for a Blue Badge due to mobility issues I have experienced such discrimination at first hand and this has made me more aware of the situation. I want our CLP members to become aware of the problems faced by disabled citizens (including our members) on a daily basis. In order to start achieving this I aim to set up training sessions so that we can all become know more of the discriminations suffered so that we can recognise what is happening and what we can do to help.
